Service Over the Holidays

Service Over the Holidays

The holidays are one of the best times of the year for lots of us. However, some others have it more difficult during the holidays. Especially during this time, it’s crucial to help others. No matter if it’s Fall or Winter, here are some fun service projects that you can do.

  • Food drives. For example, in my club, we often partner with SACA(Southern Anoka Community Assistance) and The Women of Today. Every year, we dropped off paper bags that had an attached paper that wrote out what foods and household items they need and dropped them off on doorsteps. Then, the next week, we came back and collected them and brought them to SACA. We had maps that told us which neighborhoods to go through, so we knew if we’ve been to them already. This would be great to do because you won’t need to be in close proximity with others. When we did it(before the pandemic), we drove around together. However, with the circumstances that we are in, you would have to have your own ride, but it’s still very do-able.

  • Writing cards to nursing homes. This is great to do because there are many people that live in nursing homes that can’t see their family. This will give them a sense of connection without ever leaving. These can be given out to the staff too. You can also do Pen-pals with the residence of the nursing homes as well.

  • Writing positive signs and putting them in front of your windows. This is something that can easily be done, but very influential. Hopefully if you do decide to make signs that they will help make someone’s day. They also don’t have to be just posted on a window. You can place them anywhere(with permission of course).

  • Tie blankets for homeless shelters. This is another project that my club usually does around the Fall and Winter season. Making these tie blankets are pretty simple. They even sell kits at craft stores like Micheals and Joanns.

  • Stocking stuffers for kids in adoption facilities or orphanages. This is a great way to make others happy during the holidays when they might not be so happy. You can fill them with little toys for kids and gift cards and notebooks for teens. You can fill it with anything you think will make them happy.

There are so many other service projects that you can do, but here is a start if you don’t know what to do.
